SMS is the new black

A review of mass market mobile apps

Limited take up of handset features

Some new research by US firm NPD reveals that a large proportion of US consumers only use their mobile phone for the most basic of uses and don’t use the multimedia capabilities.

– Only 20 percent of mobile phone users prefer to use their phones as an all-in-one multimedia device for music, videos, Web surfing and other activities beyond making phone calls
– 34 percent of mobile phone users did not know whether their current phone’s memory could be expanded
– 28 percent did not know if they could watch videos
– 12 percent did not know if they could access the Internet via Wi-Fi
– Nearly a quarter (23 percent) were not sure if their phone included GPS
– A similar percentage (21 percent) did not know if their handsets would play music

The findings, from the “Mobile Phone Usage Report”, is probably not that surprising to most people outside of the mobile industry. Unfortunately for many inside the industry they will be ignored as new, fancy, multimedia apps will be launched that only the early adopters within the mobile industry will use.
