Free texts and low-cost calls with Talki

Posted by Admin on December 19, 2008

Canadian company Talkster launched a new service called talki this week. I got the chance to have a chat with the COO James Wanless just before the launch and I’ve meaning to write that up. I’ll do that shortly, but for now I’ll let you have the news about the launch.

talki has been launched in Canada, the UK, South Africa and Australia to give consumers free text messages (if both sender and receiver are on talki) and low cost international calls. You can call to any country, but for now it’s only available to download and call from the countries listed.

It works as a java app, so is available for nearly every phone, and gives you a local number to dial for the international calls you want to make. Then you dial away and only pay for the local call (if you pay at all as for most people it will be in your bundle). If you’re both on talki, you can also send text messages for free.

To install and use talki you can follow their 3-point instructions

– – –

Step 1: Installing talki
You can install talki directly to your mobile phone by surfing to the talki mobile site at http://m.talki.me and clicking the download link. You can also use your computer to get the download link sent to your mobile phone by text message by surfing to the talki website http://www.talki.me (standard messaging rates apply). The installation process is quick and easy.

Step 2: Register your phone
Simply fill in your mobile phone number when prompted to complete the installation process. Once you’ve installed talki, you’ll get an activation code by text message (SMS). Simply enter the activation code.

Step 3: Start communicating!

There is a slight catch in all of this and that is that you pay talki a £1.50 weekly charge to use the service. However, you do get a seven day free trial and you get 10 free text messages to send to whoever every week.

It’s worth a try over the Xmas period if you’ve friends or relatives abroad.
