Crime-busting SMS

Posted by Admin on December 5, 2008

I came across this from Manx radio – it’s a short excerpt from an interview with the manager of the Douglas Development Partnership, Chris Pycroft. In the interview he talks about how text messaging is helping to reduce crime in Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man.

It’s very simple, if someone ‘undesirable’ is seen then other shop owners etc can be warned about it by text message. We recently reported on a similar scheme being run in the US capital.

I’m sure there could be a very sophisticated web-based solution set up with live streaming of CCTV footage and an immediate look-up to the Police database etc etc. But how many shop owners are online, yet alone would check that on an on-going basis? Now compare that to the number that walks around with a mobile in their pocket. The sms solution just gets the message out there quickly and efficiently.
